About Us

years serving the local farming community

Read Agriservices was established in 1971 on the border of Witham Friary and Upton Noble in a former Nissen Hut, which had previously served as a chicken house, by kind permission of local farmer Mr Jim May. By the mid seventies it was apparent that new premises were required to house the ever increasing demand as agriculture boomed in the area. Finding a site that was suitable for the purpose, popular with local residents and acceptable by Mendip & Taunton Council was not easy - but all criteria were eventually met and the new premises at Bruton Lane with living accommodation was opened in April 1982. 1985 saw the delivery of our first Volvo BM Valmet tractor - now sold under the Valtra banner. Quality tractors produced in Scandinavia. Kidd farm equipment soon followed later being taken over by Taarup and now under the guise of Kverneland grassland and cultivation products. Other Franchises include Yamaha ATVs perfectly complemented by the comprehensive range of Logic ground care equipment.

As the new millennium approached it was obvious that the traffic which was now arriving at Read Agriservices was getting bigger and not suitable for the narrow lanes on the approach. The opportunity to purchase the former caravan centre at nearby Wanstrow provided the perfect opportunity to continue to serve the local farming community but also to have the benefit of a main road site. Hence contracts were exchanged in August 1999 and necessary planning and alterations were carried out with the move happening in March 2001. In the new premises at Wanstrow we have expanded our retail side, endeavouring to meet the demands of our existing farming customers. Not only with machinery and repairs, but also clothing, ironmongery, gardening equipment, comprehensive plumbing fittings, timber panels, gates. We also still have a vast range of steel and fixings and supply purpose made portal steel frame buildings in painted or galvanise finish.

2012 we were greeted by the news that Agco no longer required us to sell their product. While devastated by this news we are still proud to service the Valtra product with a wealth of knowledge of the product spanning 28 years. From July 2012 we have complemented our range of products offered to include the McCormick range of tractor.
